The slate quarrying towns and valleys of Gwynedd, notably Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llanberis, Bethesda and the Nantlle Valley in the north, and Corris, Aberllefenni and Bryn Eglwys in the south of the county, are famous for their vibrant creativity, especially in the field of music. And despite the decline of the industry itself, the choirs and brass bands still thrive, and the tradition has been carried into the field of contemporary music. Many of the Welsh language’s finest bands and vocal groups hail from the slate areas, and bands who have made their name beyond the borders of Wales, such as the Super Furry Animals, have their roots in the region. This collection of songs is testimony to the thriving musical tradition of the magnificent slate valleys of Gwynedd.
