With just under 100 days to the start of the Euro 16 Football Championships in France the hype and excitement is slowly gathering speed as Wales will appear in the finals of a major championship for the first time since 1958. We’ve had sticker albums, books published and now a song to sing along to in France.
Monday, March 14 will see the release by Gwerinos of two versions of the same song penned in support of Chris Coleman’s boys. Hogia Ni and all The Way will be the first release by the band for many years. The band got together again two years ago and have been actively gigging ever since. “We had a break for a number of years but got together for a fundraiser a few years ago and it’s gone from there really,” said a band member.
The idea for the songs came on a beach in Haifa, Israel last year. “We’d just seen Wales beat Israel 3-0 and I really believed that we could do it this time and ‘go all the way!’” said band member Ywain Myfyr. “Hogia Ni was something we put on our first album, had a catchy chorus and was popular, so why not use this as the basis for the songs in both English and Welsh.” That’s what happened, with a little help from their friends. Yws Gwynedd was enlisted to sing one of the verses, radio presenters from popular Saturday morning football programme Ar y Marc came to add their voices in the chorus along with members of Band Prês Deiniolen to add a little brass. The tracks were recorded at Sain studios in January and now ready for release next week.
